Educational Programs

Accessible and Affordable Training Courses and Resources

In furtherance of our objective to increase accessibility to equine assisted services for a diverse range of people and promote humane behaviour towards horses and other equines, we offer accessible, affordable online courses and educational resources.

Why are these educational programs needed?

The horse world is synonymous with privilege and has a poor track record when it comes to creating truly equitable opportunities for people with lived experience of disadvantage, disability or discrimination. Training in the equine assisted industry is particularly expensive and difficult to access. The result is that the rich diversity of our clients, who come from all walks of life, is not reflected in those providing the services. These findings from Horses for All, a 2023 report from British Equestrian underline the issues behind elitism in equestrianism:

Racial Inequity

While 33% of white Horses for All survey respondents agreed working in an equestrian environment was a viable career option, figures from black, Asian or mixed background people were 6%, 10% and 16% respectively.

Economic Inequity

Only 9% of respondents from socioeconomically underserved communities felt that working in an equestrian environment was a viable career option.

Lack of Representation

76% of respondents agreed with the statement 'people like me are underrepresented in horse riding and other horse related activities'.

Unmet Demand

At present the demand for equine activity in diverse communities often goes unmet and many equestrians from diverse backgrounds struggle to find their place within the industry.

Our Commitment

Horses are for Everyone Not Just the Privileged Few

The Tinnis Trust is committed to leading from the front on equity, diversity and inclusion, being the change we want to see in the equestrian world by addressing financial, structural, cultural and social barriers that prevent people from marginalised communities from having careers in the equine assisted services industry. We have course participants in 54 countries, including Egypt, South America, India, Africa, Iraq, Qatar, Indonesia, Brazil and Singapore. Our beneficiaries speak more than 25 languages and come from a diverse range of ethnic and social groups. Our aim is to keep building those numbers through the provision of affordable, accessible and high-quality equine assisted courses and resources.

An Equine Assisted Learning Program for Children

The Penytrip Project

The Penytrip Project is an equine assisted learning intervention for children and young people who need help with their behaviour, communication or self esteem. It involves individual young people or small groups working on the ground with horses to learn kind, ethical horsemanship techniques. During the process, the horses acts as a mirror, helping a young person who might struggle socially to see how their voice, body language and even breathing can influence another living creature. Horses make the perfect learning partner when it comes to social skills. As herd animals, they are wired for connection. Horses don't judge, they don't lie and they have no hidden agenda. Even a child who has learned to trust no-one can trust a horse, forming a relationship based on clear communication and mutual respect.

Life and Work Skills Development for NEET Young People.

The Life Hack Course

The Life Hack Curriculum is designed to help young people aged 15- 25 to develop essential skills through caring for and training horses. It can be adapted to deliver academic, life or employability skills. It is ideal for NEET young people, care-experienced young people, younger children who are gifted or home schooled, adults with a learning difficulty, young people in alternative provision, young people with autism, ADHD and other neurodivergences, teens who are disengaged from education, students who struggle in the traditional classroom environment and young people who have lost their love of or confidence in learning. The program takes place over 12 weekly sessions lasting 90 mins- 2 hours and incorporates both horsemanship and horse care tasks.

Equine Assisted Women's Peer Mental Health Support

The Alpha Mare Course

The Marsh Christian award-winning Alpha Mare Course is a peer support program for women with a unique selling point: horses! The Alpha Mare in a herd is an assertive leader and fierce protector who has strong and connected relationships with the others in her herd.  Like the lead mare, women are often nurturers. They are programmed by society to take care of others and prone to make personal sacrifices. Due to putting their own needs last, they don't always access help for mental health.  The Alpha Mare Course helps women to reconnect with themselves and one another as they gather together to practice self care and peer support, learning to cultivate their own Alpha Mare qualities.

Therapeutic Riding for Survivors of Domestic Violence

Overcoming Obstacles

Overcoming Obstacles is a therapeutic riding program designed for women and girls who have experienced domestic violence and abuse. As they learn to literally overcome obstacles, through Competitive Western Trail Riding and Horse Agility, the program empowers women to develop essential life skills, build confidence, improve mental and physical health and create social networks. Overcoming Obstacles was designed to promote gender equality, reduce gender stereotypes, increase social inclusion, improve leadership skills and increase opportunities to access education, training and employment. Outcomes for women and girls accessing the project included increased confidence and self-esteem, development of new skills and increased physical activity linked to improved mental health and wellbeing.
